The growth of poverty in Indonesia has prompted many of its people into engaging in activities that allow greater exploitation of the environment. Although Indonesia witnessed a reduction of its poverty rates and a significant growth of its economy in the early 1990s, 50% of its population are currently living in poverty. Economists believe that, since Indonesia's problems stem from a combination of bad economics and corrupt politics, economic recovery should begin with efforts from the government to address how business is done domestically.
