Research on incarceration and educational access continues to reveal the stark reality for many adjudicated youth: without access to educational opportunities recidivism is probable. Yet conventional methods of teaching critical reading, writing, and thinking skills are not always successful for juveniles who have found little success (or hope) in traditional schooling. This essay argues that alternative literacy practices can effectively supplement conventional GED and vocational training courses by engaging juveniles through creativity, critical self-awareness, and a shift in how audience and authorship is understood. Research indicates that literate activity such as writing workshops, zine networks, peer and professional mentoring, and increased engagement with the publishing industr...

House Republicans on Wednesday scored their first victory in their long-shot bid to scrap President Obama's health care overhaul, delivering a repeal bill to the Senate and a stiff rebuke of White House policy that will help shape the political landscape over the weeks, months and years to come.
In one of its first acts since winning the House, the new Republican majority passed the repeal bill on a mostly party-line vote, fulfilling a campaign promise many of them made to voters last year, but now the effort moves on to the more substantive task of writing an alternative to the law Mr. Obama signed in March.

I AM A FORMER resident of Murray Drive, near Battlefield Golf Club. I am not writing to debate the pro and cons of coal usage or the benefits of alternative forms of energy. I am simply demanding that Chesapeake City Council revoke the golf course's conditional permit and begin the immediate removal of the coal ash.
In the fall of 2002, my wife and I bought what we thought was our dream home. Little did we know, it was to be our worst nightmare.

Muldoon reacts to composition scholars finding new and better ways to formatively and summatively evaluate student writing whether they have sought and continue to seek methods of response which are ethical and sensitive to student differences, which encourage and challenge students to think more critically about their subjects, and which move students toward meeting the overall goals for a particular assignment and course. Also, essays that allow a deeper investigation and analysis of a particular text's contributions and disciplinary implications that prominently showcase and give credibility to a powerful alternative for constructing novelty and scholarly validity in academic writing.

Jay Leno's much-promoted move to prime time arrived to solid ratings this week, but if you were looking for sizzle and innovation, you were probably disappointed. The 10 p.m. "Jay Leno Show" scored a 12.1 household rating and a 19 share Monday night despite being up against a good "Monday Night Football" game. He was helped out with appearances by Jerry Seinfeld and Kanye West, who only one day before had stirred controversy by dissing Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Critics were nonplussed by the opener, with Robert Bianco of USA Today writing, "It's a new business idea, an attempt to provide cheap, alternative programming five nights a week in a 10 p.m. slot the network was probably going to lose anyway. But creatively, there wasn't an original thought to be found, which i...

I'll probably get letters from all of the chemical lawn-control businesses by writing this column, but I get questions all the time asking for alternative ways to control pests in the yard. I have some suggestions.
An environmentally safe way to control grubs, especially in lawns, is milky spore. Milky spore is a disease that specifically targets Japanese beetle grubs and, once in the soil, continues to control them for 20 years. Milky spore will not spread in the soil unless grubs are present. The more grubs there are, the faster the disease spreads among them, according to www.extremelygreen.com's pest-control guide.
