Many doctors put focus on wellness
Your recent article on alternative medicine taught in medical school, and critics describing it as illogical thinking and pseudoscience ("Alternative remedies gain ground at medical schools," Nov. 2), left me with a plethora of emotions.

Individuals should be able to select the health care service providers they want and not face restrictions or denials of care because of government regulations. Nurse practitioners, chiropractors, midwives and providers of alternative medicine are not licensed, yet can perform the same duties as doctors.

The report suggests that far from promoting patient safety, the current tort system discourages accurate medical error reporting among healthcare providers, as doctors try to protect themselves against the c...

WASHINGTON, March 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As health care reform marks its one-year anniversary, a new Deloitte report reveals that consumers are spending $363 billion, or 14.7 percent more, on health care than traditionally reported in official government accounts. This spending falls outside of conventionally-counted health care costs such as doctors, prescriptions, hospitals and health insurance coverage. Demonstrating the significance of the amount consumers now spend on health care, the additional costs captured in the new Deloitte study support an increase in consumer discretionary spending on health care from 16.2 percent, for items traditionally reported by the government, to 19.9 percent, which surpasses housing and utility costs at 18.8 percent.
More than half of the spending ...
