While increased federal regulations threaten to drive up utility bills, the state law that forces power companies to generate a quarter of West Virginia's power using renewable or alternative energy sources by 2025 may have little effect on rates. Officials from the state's two largest power companies said they expect little or no additional costs to comply with the 2009 Alternative and Renewable Energy Portfolio Act.
