  • From neighborhood disputes to family-related battles, Oklahomans wanting to avoid the time, expense and adversarial nature of the court system can access a wealth of information about mediating disagreements on a new court system Web site. Sue Tate, director of the state's Alternative Dispute Resolution system, said a new link on the Oklahoma Supreme Court Network Web site provides access to forms and information as well as directories of 12 early settlement and 11 state-agency mediation programs, how they work and how to contact them.   • On Nov 15, 2007, in a per curiam decision, the Florida Supreme Court approved an important change to the qualifications for circuit court mediators. The change eliminates the need to have a law license in order to be certified. The court approved the point system in concept, recognizing that "the general consensus in the alternative dispute resolution community is that possession of academic degrees, including law degrees, do not necessarily predict an individual's ability to be a good mediator." The court also approved amended Rule 10.100, which provides that an applicant must have the required number of points for the type of certification sought (e.g., family mediator or circuit court mediator).

  • Seven years after alternative dispute resolution gained a foothold in Maryland, the state has decided to formally recognize its impact on the judicial system with an annual observance. Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert M. Bell have declared tomorrow Maryland Conflict Resolution Day.
