While editing a story recently, I noticed that our spell-checker wanted to change Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Ruth Badger Ginsburg and Barbara Walters to Barbara Wallets. Sure, Ruth is tenacious and Barbara probably needs oodles of wallets to hold all of her money, but the spellings are still inaccurate. It reminded me of an incident last year, when a yearbook company's computer spell- checker ran amok and changed the names of students at Middletown High School.
Lauren Givler became Lauren Giver. Max Zupanovic became Max Supernova. And Kathy Carbaugh became Kathy Airbag.

Welcome to the bizarro world where up is down, Sarah Palin is left, NASCAR turns are right and Steelers fans have more reason to grouse about Lawrence Timmons than they do William Gay.
The Steelers entered an alternate universe Sunday, after Arian Foster became the first running back to rush for at least 150 yards and a touchdown against them since 2001.

IN
THE ALTERNATE universe of Shaun Tan's books, despair hangs overhead like a milky-eyed dead fish. Homesick strangers puzzle over vending machines with impenetrable instructions. An unexpected friend has tentacles. An unfriendly city has tubes, dials and warnings not to look too closely at anything that doesn't make sense.

DETROIT - This is what it feels like to visit an alternate universe, where the hopeless (A.J. Burnett) are suddenly architects of brilliance. Where the endangered (Yankees) laugh at the abyss staring them in the face. And those who are seemingly in control (the Tigers) are forced to beg for mercy.
Welcome to the all-new, totally re-designed Division Series, which is heading back to New York tied after the Yankees' 10-1 rout in Game 4. The Yankees and Tigers are on equal terms now, but that's only in a theoretical sense. The reality says the Bombers are suddenly the monsters in this one-game shootout, considering they have Ivan Nova, an awakened offense - yes, even Alex Rodriguez is hitting - and a home crowd that'll pick up on the mid-westerners' fear the instant they step in the buildi...

It's like being in an alternate universe for the Memphis In May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.
The rising Mississippi River forced the three-day event to relocate from Tom Lee Park to Tiger Lane at the Mid-South Fairgrounds. It starts Thursday.

We're a bit ashamed to confess this, but there may have been times (rare, rare times), when reader requests have gone unpublished because they got lost here at RR headquarters.
You see, we try to be very organized with our files (OK, we have one large file), but still, it is painstakingly organized according to fulfilled and unfulfilled requests. Somehow, though, certain requests slip from one side to the other, or - and we suspect this to be the actual case - they vanish into some alternate universe, where they spend a few months, or years, lounging around, then return to torment us.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Red Sox might've been slightly embarrassed at Josh Beckett's recent 100-win, we'll-own-the-universe prediction, because no one in camp dares to repeat it. Still, the Sox' confidence is unmistakable, as the Yankees concede they're only the East's second-best team and 2011 looms as some alternate-universe nightmare in the Bronx.
The Sox outspent the Yankees by almost 400 percent in off-season acquisitions ($156 million to $43 million), which sufficiently changed the balance of power so that even the usually optimistic Mark Teixeira is now describing the Bombers as "underdogs.

Realities of terrorism
David Sirota (?Blowback from drone assaults predictable and inevitable," May 15) would like us to imagine many things as part of his "alternate universe," which is, while interesting as a fantasy realm of sorts, entirely implausible, as one can only suspend their disbelief so far in such matters.

In an alternate universe, the Daniel Boone American Little League All-Star team's focus would extend only as far as its Midwest Regional opener Saturday in Indianapolis.
The trip to Little League heaven that potentially awaits beyond?
