FORT LEE -- Music and tennis seem to have little in common. Richard B. Thompson would have begged to differ. Mr. Thompson taught both -- music for four decades in the Cliffside Park schools and tennis over the years at venues such as the Fort Lee Recreation Center, the Alpine Country Club in Demarest and the West Side Tennis Club at Forest Hills. He even produced an instructional LP with one of the greats of the game, Arthur Ashe.

WASHINGTON -- Congress is stepping into a dispute between environmentalists and the ski industry over whether ski areas should be able to expand their summertime recreation, a move critics say could allow them to build amusement parks. Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., introduced a bill Monday that would allow ski areas to offer year-round recreation on land they lease from the U.S. Forest Service. Mountain biking, alpine slides and zip- lines that whiz people above forests and valleys are among the more common summertime activities pursued by ski resorts.
ALPINE -- Alpine's City Council voted unanimously this week to approve funds for a survey of Alpine, Cedar Hills and Highland residents regarding a potential recreation facility that would service the three neighboring north Utah County cities. The $3,263 Alpine will pay for the survey is only a portion of the overall cost, which will be shared by Cedar Hills and Highland, for a feasibility study regarding the project. Alpine has already approved $6,762 to participate in the feasibility study.
Maine Winter Sports Center has named Mark Shea as community development director. Shea previously worked for the Caribou Parks and Recreations Department. OREM -- The waves of discontent in Orem's Springwater neighborhood have calmed. A group of Springwater residents rallied last summer against Alpine District's plans to put two alternative schools in an old recreation center in their neighborhood.
