JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - It becomes strangely fascinating to watch a grown man's insecurities tumble out of him with a thousand strangers hanging on his every word. He is careful of nothing, measuring his words in only how thrilling they sound leaving his mouth. No one understands T.O., and no one loves him the way they should, and they sure don't appreciate the lengths he's going to play on Sunday.
No, they just try to keep T.O. down, and they've been doing that forever with him. The list of transgressors is endless: Steve Young threw too much to Jerry Rice and Jeff Garcia couldn't throw the ball far enough, Sharpie wouldn't hire him to be an endorser and the 49ers made him out to be a problem in the locker room.

On the other sideline, West Virginia defensive end Jason Hardee sat on his team's bench, distraught over the 30-18 loss, with a towel over his head. Defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel consoled him.

IF it seems, after a No. 10 preseason ranking and all of the attendant hoopla, that West Virginia's Gator Bowl bid is something of a consolation game, the Mountaineers had better look across the field at Alltel Stadium on Jan. 1.
Florida State's status in college football ... well, let's just say the Gator isn't the "New Year's Day bowl" the Seminoles are accustomed to visiting.
