Maryland's top court Wednesday upheld Allstate Insurance Co.'s decision to stop offering new homeowners' policies in Southern Maryland, the Lower Eastern Shore and parts of Anne Arundel County due to the company's potential for catastrophic financial losses if a hurricane hits that region.
In its 6-1 decision, the Court of Appeals said Allstate reasonably decided in 2006 not to issue new policies after concluding that a Category 4 hurricane -- involving winds over 130 mph -- would cause more than $237 million in property damage were it to make landfall in Worcester County.

That percentage held true even among homeowners who said their home values had declined. Seven of 10 Americans say they would advise a friend or family member to buy a home as a long-term asset. Allstate Corp.'s insurance premiums could be at "considerable risk" in 2012 if in fact agents are as unhappy as a new survey suggests and if their ranks have dropped as much as estimated, an analyst said last week.
The National Association of Professional Allstate Agents Inc., which is often critical of the Northbrook, Ill.-based home and auto insurer, released a study showing that nearly 73 percent of agents were "not very" or "not at all" satisfied with their relationship with the company. Also, when asked if they'd be willing to refer a friend or relative to become an Allstate agent, 85 percent responded either "not likely" or "would recommend against it.
