Catastrophe bonds are becoming a mainstream investment and risk transfer tool, and 2007 is on target to break last year's record number of transactions. As of October 1, 19 transactions totaling $4.8 billion in risk capital had been transferred to the capital markets, and more are expected before year-end, said Chris McGhee, managing director of GC Securities, an affiliate of reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter.
