At the end of each year, newspapers devote much space to the past -- reflecting on the events, trends and newsmakers that have marked the past 12 months. Certainly, year's end is an appropriate time for contemplation; it also is a time to gaze forward. Just as New Year's resolutions will be made over the coming weeks, we are resolved to the examine past, present and future of our city's vital cultural scene.
By peering through the creative viewpoints of three very talented young people, we can glimpse a microcosm of the vibrant contributions youths are making to Columbia's arts community and get a sense of the bright artistic future which awaits our city.

As far as we know, the cat experience is still foreclosure free, so if it's bad news you want, flee fast from "Purr More, Hiss Less, Heavenly Lessons I Learned From My Cat" by Allia Zobl Nolan and illustrator Erika Oller.
The chubby little gift book by Health Communications Inc. (hcibooks.com, $16.95) follows a time-honored formula clever lines accompanied by delightful photo or illustration but stands above the crowd largely because of Oller's sumptuous watercolor renderings.
