Allegations of misconduct by the father and son who head the Town of Collins Highway Department have been forwarded to county and state authorities, while town leaders seek to have the father removed from elected office. This week, the Collins Town Board voted to have the town attorney pursue, under the Public Officers Law, the removal of Highway Superintendent Francis "Joe" Gernatt Jr. for malfeasance in office. The vote was unanimous; Councilman David F. Tessmer was absent.
Lola Rakes says a correctional officer sexually abused her every single day during her incarceration at the Anthony Center, a prison in Greenbrier County for young offenders. The man's advances started with a kiss on the neck and assurances that he could make her prison stay easier, she said. Eventually, the officer began forcing Rakes to have sex with him, she said, and threatened to have her transfered to a higher-security prison if she told anyone.
DAYTON -- China Arnold's first aggravated murder trial ended in a mistrial. Her second ended in a conviction. The question now before Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Mary Wiseman is: Will there be a third?
PROVO -- Utah County Republican Party officials dismissed all allegations of misconduct Thursday against state House of Representatives candidate Garr Judd. Judd, a former legislative district chair for District 61, the same district where he is now running, was accused by party member Richard Jaussi of several violations of party bylaws in a letter sent to party leaders in March.
A complaint before the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) by four veteran Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officials accuses Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier of "a disturbing pattern of discriminatory conduct" in handing down harsher discipline for male officers than female officers. Cmdr. Willie Dandridge, Cmdr. Hilton Burton, Capt. Victor Brito and Capt. Kevin Anderson identify 10 male officers disciplined and demoted by Chief Lanier and eight female officers who avoided a similar fate, and claim that "when allegations of misconduct swirled within the command staff, if the command official was a woman, she was never demoted and rarely disciplined.
