STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - In a stunning shakeup, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and school president Graham Spanier were fired Wednesday night by the board of trustees amid the growing furor over how the school handled child-sex-abuse allegations against a former assistant coach.
Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football, was ousted at the end of day that began with his announcement to retire at end of the season, his 46th. But that was not to be.

A $7.3 million judgment this week ended a lawsuit that, in an unusual turn, became a path-breaking case about harassment through text messages.
The lawsuit was filed in 2007 and was, until just a day before the judgment was entered on Tuesday, largely based on claims of childhood sexual abuse. After a confidential agreement between the parties, the plaintiffs dropped that count, along with allegations of battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Town Supervisor Robert B. Cliffe said Monday he would "prefer" an independent investigation into recent allegations that hundreds of healthy animals were unnecessarily euthanized at the SPCA of Niagara.

Lola Rakes says a correctional officer sexually abused her every single day during her incarceration at the Anthony Center, a prison in Greenbrier County for young offenders.
The man's advances started with a kiss on the neck and assurances that he could make her prison stay easier, she said. Eventually, the officer began forcing Rakes to have sex with him, she said, and threatened to have her transfered to a higher-security prison if she told anyone.
