The quote of the week comes from Pittsburgh attorney Heather Heidelbaugh, who's long been bird-dogging allegations of impropriety against ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.
It was her congressional testimony that prompted House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., to say, at least initially, that he'd consider hearings on the matter. He conveniently reneged on that consideration right in the middle of Nevada and Pennsylvania officials lodging charges of voter registration fraud against the group that also was no two-bit player in the subprime mortgage mess.

MIGHTY RUCKUS FROM LITTLE ACORN GROWS
In his Sept. 27 letter, "ACORN under attack," Sam Hitt defends ACORN against the allegations of fraud and abuse. He does this even as the ACORN chief organizer, Bertha Jones, admits there are definitely problems, and she thanks James O'Keefe, the young videographer who recently exposed some of ACORN's corrupt workers. Criminal proceedings against ACORN begin this week in Nevada. The charges are being brought by Secretary of State Ross Miller and District Attorney Catherine Cortez Mastro, both Democrats. Allegations include illegally registering false names, including Dallas Cowboy football players and Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today, ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) announced that the last of three politically-motivated lawsuits filed against the group in the wake of its successful 2004 voter outreach drive has been "dismissed with prejudice." Each of the three cases (two in Florida and one in Ohio) were brought by partisan law firms based on unfounded allegations of "voter fraud" against the organization -- and all three cases have been dismissed.
In 2004, ACORN ran the largest non-partisan voter outreach program and assisted more 1.1 million low and moderate income and minority voters nationwide in registering to vote, including 210,000 in Florida and 190,000 in Ohio.

An independent investigation commissioned by ACORN cleared the embattled organization of systematic lawbreaking on Monday, but recommended that it stop some of its political work and revealed serious management shortcomings.
Former Massachusetts Attorney General L. Scott Harshbarger said his 11-week investigation did not find a pattern of illegal conduct by ACORN employees who were secretly videotaped advising conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp on criminal activities, including tax evasion and human trafficking.
