Missouri basketball Coach Frank Haith denied an allegation that his staff tampered with former Pittsburgh player Khem Birch, who announced earlier this month that he is transferring from the Panthers program. The allegation surfaced in a Twitter message from CBSSports.com's Jeff Goodman, who wrote yesterday morning: "Told, per sources, that Pittsburgh has not given a release for Missouri to recruit Khem Birch. Source said Pitt thinks Mizzou was tampering.
Cubs trade Cashner CHICAGO -- The Cubs traded Andrew Cashner, a 6- foot-6 right-hander, and minor league outfielder Kyung-Min Na to the San Diego Padres for first baseman Anthony Rizzo and minor league right-hander Zach Cates on Friday. Cubs GM Jed Hoyer said Rizzo will likely start the season in Triple-A with Brian LaHair being the starting Cubs' first baseman. LaHair hit 38 homers and batted .331 at Triple-A Iowa last year. The Associated Press Chicago police are investigating an allegation that Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro sexually assaulted a woman last fall.
A fourth woman has accused Herman Cain of sexually inappropriate behavior when he was CEO of the National Restaurant Association, telling reporters Monday that the Republican presidential candidate slid his hand under her skirt and pulled her head toward his crotch as they sat in a car. The Cain campaign responded that the new allegation, specified as occurring in Washington in mid-July 1997, was another "bogus" and "completely false" attack.
PORTLAND, Ore. - Congressman David Wu, who earlier this year apologized for bizarre behavior during his most recent re-election campaign, was dealing Saturday with yet another crisis - a young woman's reported accusation that she had an "unwanted sexual encounter" with the Democrat three weeks after his election victory in November. The Washington Post reported that the seven-term Democrat was planning to meet with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in Washington, D.C., on Saturday to discuss the allegation, which was reported by The Oregonian newspaper.
When Bishop David Zubik last month publicly denied a recent claim that he tried to kiss a Quigley High School student in the 1980s, his openness contrasted sharply with the secrecy surrounding allegations of misconduct involving other top Roman Catholic clergy. As television cameras recorded last month's extraordinary news conference set by the diocese, Zubik invited questions from reporters because "once you've been accused, it's hard to wipe it all away," said the Rev. Ron Lengwin, spokesman for the 673,801- member Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.
BLOOMINGTON -- The heads of two outside police departments may yet look into a Bloomington assistant police chief's response to a racial profiling allegation. Bloomington detective Michael Johnson said an off-duty state trooper stopped him on Sept. 13 because Johnson is black. Johnson said in a written complaint that Assistant Police Chief Ed Moser used "twisted and tortured logic" in justifying the trooper's actions following the incident.
BANGOR - The retired priest who oversaw the $2 million renovation of St. John Catholic Church in Bangor between 1986 and 1991 has been reinstated to public ministry, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland has announced. The Rev. Maurice T. Lebel, 78, was removed temporarily from ministry in June 2007 after a complaint of alleged sexual abuse of a minor in Massachusetts during the early 1980s was made. At the time of the complaint, Lebel was a Jesuit - a member of the Society of Jesus - ministering in Massachusetts.
