This research centers on the linkage between alienation and voter turnout, by considering the various dimensions of alienation-powerlessness, meaninglessness, and cynicism-and how they might interact to influence the decision on whether to vote. Logit analysis of a pooled American National Election Study data set, 1964-2000, suggests that feelings of powerlessness and meaninglessness depress turnout, as expected. However, increased cynicism can serve to boost turnout among those who display only a moderate amount of powerlessness or meaningless, therefore underscoring an important interactive effect of cynicism on voter turnout. During the past three decades, American have become less attached to the two major political parties, more cynical about elected officials and political institu...

The book, which Lybarger describes as "a sustained attempt to listen carefully to Palestinians and interpret their choices within a framework informed by historical context, ethnographic observation, and sociological theory" (p. xv), examines the impact on Palestinian individuals and families of two intifadas, the Oslo Accords, the faltering hegemony of the Palestine National Authority, and the humiliations and deprivations generated by Israel's policies of "de-development." Lybarger uses an extensive corpus of interviews to good effect in suturing together individual narratives of alienation, frustration, and betrayal with incisive analyses of the impacts on a wide range of constituencies of factors such as the Left's increasing secularism, Hamas' elevation of political patronage over...

While North Carolina remains one of the few states that still allows alienation of affection claims, a new law recently took effect limiting the time period for the suits.
Under the new law, a party may not file suit if an affair takes place after the married couple has separated; before, one spouse could sue the third party for an affair no matter when it took place.

Most importantly, Mei's androgynous charm not only enchanted a generation of Chinese men and women, but also spread widely outside China: the founders of United Artists-Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin-welcomed him to the United States in 1930, where he was a recipient of honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Southern California and Pomona College; his 1935 Soviet performance was said to have inspired Bertolt Brecht's theory of the "alienation effect"2 and stimulated Sergei Eisenstein to shoot a documentary film on location.3 A black and white photo (Figure 1) vividly displays the kind of attention Mei Lanfang attracted during his tours abroad. A more sympathetic reading of both male and female dilemmas in their historical conditions will help complicate...

Pittsburgh boosters and bashers alike seem to think we've cornered the market on sports obsession. Fans point to such ardent fanaticism with pride; detractors cite it with contempt. One side asks, "Why don't you sports fans get a life?" The other insists that if you don't have the hypocycloids tattooed on your posterior, you're not a real fan. It's kinda like the Comcast "Steelers 24/7" ads. (Those are jokes, right? Riffing on the very stereotype we're talking about here. Right?)
Sports provides a ready-made connection, a ready-to-use social network," says Daniel Wann, professor of psychology at Murray State University and author of Sports Fans: The Psychology and Social Impact of Spectators. Wann has conducted over two decades of research on sports fans. His studies all show that spor...

Previous literature suggests that international students experience more serious alienation than do American students due to difficulty in adjusting to new campus life in the United States. The purpose of the current study is to find out the applicability of the social correlates of alienation, as evidenced in previous studies, to the college under study and to find out the extent to which the findings may deviate from studies done in larger educational institutions. I proposed a variation in the level of alienation experienced by International and American students, and that relationships exist between independent variables - geographic home region, duration of stay in the U.S. and College, and frequency of social contact with other students and dependent variable - alienation.
