KETTERING -- Bodies and skateboards were flying everywhere, usually together, Wednesday at the Kettering Skate Plaza in celebration of Go Skateboarding Day.
Alien Workshop, a Daytonbased skateboard store, hosted the event with Habitat and Active. Each shop brought some of its top professional skateboarders.

Tom Sloan's father-in-law suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Nearly five years ago, Sloan and his wife, Darlene, moved to Charleston from California to be closer to her aging parents in Beckley and to help take care of her father, Claude Burton.
The couple commuted to Beckley, where her parents lived. Eventually, it made more sense for the family to bring her parents to Charleston, said Sloan, 39.

Hosted by the Actors Theatre-Kentucky's only professional African-American theater company-the Juneteenth Jamboree celebrates African-American independence and its legacy with plays, concerts and staged readings. This year's Jamboree welcomes home guest artist Nora Cole, a Louisville native and Broadway actress ("Jelly's Last Jam," "Caroline or Change," "On the Town") along with Imani, artistic director of the Richard Alien Center for Culture and Art, which has been operating for 38 years in New York City. The Jamboree will also include "DARASA: A Civil Rights Tribute in Song," an exhibit of local visual artists, and a "Creating Your Own One-Character Play" workshop over three weekends. The Jamboree is a wonderful way to celebrate Juneteenth.

Cotillion general chairperson, Link Ramona R. Wilder, commenced the program at the appointed hour. The theme selected for this special evening was "Beautiful Flower." As Link Wilder noted, the theme was a tribute to the inner strength, beauty, growth and blossoming of each young lady. Link Wilder extended greetings to guests and welcomed everyone with appreciation for support of the Chapter's activities.
