BALTIMORE -- In a dining room Thursday morning at Pimlico Race Course, several hundred people attended the traditional Alibi Breakfast, a gathering of horsemen and dignitaries who celebrate and attempt to predict Saturday's $1 million Preakness Stakes.
For parts of two hours they spoke of Roy and Gretchen Jackson's colt, Barbaro, who will attempt to become only the third horse in 30 years to remain undefeated through the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

Five years ago, David Gordon came to Milwaukee from across the great pond - no, not Lake Michigan, the Atlantic Ocean - for a job, and he proceeded to take one of the best things that ever happened to this town and make it even better. Gordon, the director and CEO of the Milwaukee Art Museum, arrived in Milwaukee in 2002 when the Santiago Calatrava-designed addition to the museum was brand- spanking new. The British-born Gordon, announced this week that he will step down next March. He's leaving on a high note. The museum is now unencumbered by debt. Good show, David.
A pity we can't say the same about Chicago's Olympic committee, the group hoping to land the 2016 Olympics - an effort we wholeheartedly support, by the way. The committee has gotten off to a sloppy start with its newspape...

You told us that while you were allowing us as "ideologically motivated defendants" each our five minutes to explain our motives, such indulgence on your part was gratuitous and not our right. Previous decisions, you told us, rendered such testimony "irrelevant." Relevance did arise through the trial as the most vital issue but it rose not concerning the relevance of our motives (this was never really in question) but rather the relevance of a court whose view is so limited as not to understand the difference between a crime and a rescue. A deciding moment in the trial was when Renee Espeland asked you plainly if anything she might say might make a difference to you. With your assurance that no, anything she might say would be irrelevant to the court and so would be discounted, she wave...

Enthusiasm is fine, but eventually it's time to take a campaign out and shoot it. We're getting close to that time. Outrage, irritation, polls, rallies and speeches finally grow old. Fortunately, it's almost time to vote.
Public-opinion polls can go only so far, but with modern polling methods that's far enough. If the Democrats pull a respectable result out of this campaign it will be the most stunning surprise since the old Literary Digest - which polled only its readers - predicted that Alf Landon would defeat Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936.
