When a rocker gets his wings
Autumn is upon us like heat on a habanero pepper: there are already signs of ski-bumification below 9,000 feet. The chatter in my house has switched from vine-ripened tomatoes to bitchin' powder. The giganti-stores have been hawking candy corn since early August. Seriously, my teeth are rotting, and I haven't even eaten a pumpkin Peep yet. Summer is but a memory, my life now punctuated by smoky pinon, hearty soups, and an abrupt end to local music festivals. But wait ... a last gasp! Albuquerque's annual Alibi Fall Crawl returns this year with an arsenal of local and national acts, proving that, even though you're now thinking of dressing in layers, the chance to rock on has not passed you by.

Months of blistering campaign ads, mind-numbing accusations and counteraccusations, nonstop solicitations for campaign contributions, annoying robo-calls and pleas to show up at the polls are finally coming to an end as Susana Martinez and Diane Denish battle down to the last moment to see who becomes the next governor of New Mexico.
While Republican Martinez has maintained a solid lead in independent polls, she's campaigning like she's taking nothing for granted. Meanwhile, Democrat Denish is fighting on as if her motto were, "Damn the polls, full speed ahead!

In the last year, The Santa Fe Reporter was recognized in the New Mexico Press Association's annual newspaper contest for investigative and in-depth journalism for stories that ranged from leadership at the community college to health care in the county jail. Reportage on New Mexico's public records law for police records won it a national award for media reporting. SFR has published each Wednesday since 1974, and can be found for free at hundreds of sites in Santa Fe. Its weekly offerings include comprehensive arts and culture coverage with music, art and film columns and opinionated listings for everything from gallery openings to lectures. Eleven months out of the year, SFR publishes special issues and supplements, including the Annual Manual, an award-winning restaurant guide, seaso...

[Brett Bratcher] says Canntechs' doctors will not "prescribe" marijuana to patients but, when appropriate, will "recommend" the patient for the program, usually with the consent of the patient's primary care physician.
What we're doing is saying, 'This person has a chronic condition and, if they want to register with the state to carry a card, I endorse that,'" Bratcher says. "That's what the physician is doing and that is what we're teaching them to do.
"I have been googling since (my doctor] refused to sign my application for the Medical Cannabis program a week ago," Susan, a 64-year-old glaucoma patient, wrote to SFR via email on July 15. "My glaucoma eye drops irritate my eyes and when I have a 'social occasion' I quit the drops for two days... It is not good for the pressure to g...

If there's a disconnect between New Mexico's traditional "patron" politics of cronyism and Obama's politics of change, Lujan may be the missing link. He is his father's son, and his father, House Speaker [Ben Ray Lujan], is still one of the most powerful and old-school fixtures of New Mexico politics. By most standards, northern New Mexico's freshman congressman has exceeded liberal expectations, particularly on renewable energy, through his seat on the House Committee on Science and Technology. And no one is complaining about New Mexico not receiving enough federal money (he claims $240 million in July alone for military and economic stimulus), though his opponents may use such figures against him as the nation's debt swells.
