TURIN, Italy -- U.S. champion Johnny Weir might be playing mind games when he says Evgeni Plushenko is a heavy favorite for gold in men's figure skating. Then again, he's probably correct.
The Russian, who finished second to countryman Alexei Yagudin at the 2002 Games, deserves front-runner status heading into tonight's men's short program. Plushenko owns three world championships and, by far, the best overall package in what should be a highly competitive field -- for silver and bronze.

Skating on thin ice
It's mano-a-womano tonight in the Peoria Civic Center Arena, where the nationally touring Ice Wars: Battle of the Sexes brings armies of professional team figure skaters for some gender-specific competition at 7 p.m. In fact, this is the first time the "Ice Wars" tour, founded in 1994, has ever been divided along gender lines. Adding to the tension: It's all being taped for an upcoming CBS network special. Among the male combatants are Brian Boitano, Alexei Yagudin, Kurt Browning and Elvis Stojko; among the females, Katarina Witt, Oksana Baiul, Nicole Bobek and veteran blade warrior Nancy Kerrigan. Tickets are $36.50 to $56.50 at the PCC box office.
