The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence is coming off its most successful golf outing ever. The 31st Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational raised $425,000 for the Mineola- based organization, the highest tally from a tournament in the agency's history. The news: Baclofen - a widely prescribed, non-narcotic muscle relaxant - has shown promise in helping to reduce alcohol cravings for patients in drug and alcohol treatment. In a recent study, researchers found that patients with advanced alcoholism who were taking Baclofen were 42 percent more likely to remain abstinent than those who received a placebo.
The response: While this is exciting news, further studies are necessary to establish Baclofen's effectiveness in treating alcoholism, said Dr. David Sack, a researcher and chief executive officer of Promises' alcohol and drug treatment centers.
