The quiet new Sant Building at the Phillips Collection, which opens to the public next Saturday, does not look the way a museum is supposed to look these days. Once upon a time, there was a terrific and wildly strange American movie about two morbid people who liked to hang out at funerals and who met and fell into a peculiar form of love.
Its name was "Harold and Maude," and it was made by the late, great director Hal Ashby in 1971. It starred Bud Cort, the strangest young star of the '70s, as Harold and octogenarian Ruth Gordon as Maude.
