• Exercise is the latest form of medicine for people with Parkinson's disease, helping to steady tremors, smooth the steps and relax the expressions of people whose bodies become ever more rigid as the disease progresses. A pilot wellness program at the Ridgewood YMCA for people with the incurable movement disorder appears to help them both physically and mentally: physically through exercises to improve balance, coordination, and flexibility and mentally through the up-tempo atmosphere and group support.

  • COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Forrest Gregg, who earned the nickname "Iron Man" for playing in a then-record 188 consecutive NFL games during his Hall of Fame career, has told The Associated Press he's been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Although the cause of the debilitating neurological disorder is unknown, Gregg, his family and his neurologist say his disease may be related to numerous concussions he suffered during his playing career in the 1950s at SMU and from 1956-71 with the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys.

  • Brent Peterson leaned on a pole outside the Nashville Predators' dressing room, arms gesticulating as he joked with coach Barry Trotz and longtime hockey man Don Waddell. It appeared to be your everyday, run-of-the-mill moment, three average guys hanging out at a rink. For Peterson, however, those moments of the mundane have been diminishing. Parkinson's disease has begun to get the upper hand in the battle he and the incurable condition have waged for eight years. The Nashville assistant coach and former Sabres center can no longer skate with his team. He sleeps only one or two hours, the discomfort keeping him awake and making the days longer.

  • By Tim Carpenter THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL Gov. Mark Parkinson went to the nation's capital Wednesday to urge passage of legislation stalled in Congress that would deliver $130 million in federal aid already built into the state government's new budget.

  • April is Parkinson's Awareness Month, helping bring much-needed attention to this chronic, progressive neurological disease that affects movement, speaking and cognitive function. More than 1 million Americans live with Parkinson's disease - myself included - and it is important that we use this month to celebrate, commemorate and educate the public and our elected officials about Parkinson's and the need for a cure. I want to encourage Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Michael Costello to support biomedical research that can lead to better treatments and a cure for Parkinson's.

  • Dr. Peter Jannetta wasn't necessarily searching for a breakthrough in the treatment of Parkinson's disease as he prepared a patient for surgery to relieve the intense facial pain that had plagued her for more than a decade.
