On Aug. 24, Dr. Farid Abu Dheir, professor of journalism at An-Najah National University, and a dear friend of my family, became the latest addition to their number (and, indeed, to the two-score Palestinian professors in Israeli jails), when Israeli occupation troops arbitrarily kidnapped him at one of the 750-plus illegal roadblocks, euphemistically known as "checkpoints," which paralyze activity and dislocate normal life throughout the length and breadth of this tiny, brave, suffering land.

Studies on Palestine are seriously limited by the lack of reliable and comprehensive aggregate data on the Palestinian people. The last Palestinian census was conducted in 1931 when Palestine was still under British rule. There is an urgent need for a new census because it is vital to understanding the Palestinian national identity and has the potential of unifying the Palestinian diaspora. White it does not necessary mean democratic representation, a census serves to connect the state to the members of its population.

NABLUS, West Bank (MCT) -- Born in a refugee camp in this restive West Bank city, Ammar Arafat threw his first stone at 13. By 15, he was jailed for scaling the fence of an Israeli military camp with explosives under his shirt. Upon release, he took up arms again and landed back in prison.
Freshly out of jail for the second time, Arafat, 20, is mulling his next move. But nowadays, he's traded in his explosives vest for a designer military jacket with shiny Armani buttons. After finishing high school while in prison, a more mature Arafat said he wants to enroll in college, find work as a Palestinian police officer and build a stable life.

Hamas' nominee for Palestinian finance minister, Omar Abdel Razeq, said yesterday that he hopes to negotiate a new economic treaty with Israel, even though he supports the Islamic militant party's refusal to recognize the Jewish state for peace talks.
The desire to embrace Israel in what would amount to a major treaty indicates how Hamas politicians and the ministerial nominees have resigned themselves to a de facto acknowledgement of Israel to improve the daily lives of their constituents.
