Five current or former trustees of Erie Community College are criticizing fellow board member Hormoz Mansouri's efforts to win a major construction project at the North Campus while serving on the institution's governing body. They say he should choose between seeking a now-delayed $30 million project and his position on the board to avoid any perception of conflict of interest.
When six sheriff's deputies killed an Adelanto man in an Oct. 21, 2010, shootout, they were justified, according to a report released Thursday by the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office. Amir Mansouri, 33, died at his home in the 21000 block of Lilac Road when he fired at the deputies - hitting one - and they returned fire.
Hormoz Mansouri does pretty well by Erie County government. Mansouri, you'll recall, is the deep-pocketed political donor whose engineering and architectural firm assists developers in projects, some on a large scale. When Joel A. Giambra was county executive the two were close, and Mansouri's EI Team was often hired to assist the county with its undertakings. The EI Team also has been involved with Erie County Medical Center's expansion of its campus on Grider Street. Considering this, Mansouri looked kind of acquisitive by seeking a contract to help build a $30 million academic building planned for the Erie Community College North Campus. Actually, Mansouri looked acquisitive and conflicted because he has served on the college's board of s since Giambra put him there...
In 2001, when I first interviewed incoming San Francisco Opera general director Pamela Rosenberg, I was less amazed by her taste in opera than I was with the candor of her opinions. She was "on the record" as not caring for Benjamin Britten, but producing his Billy Budd anyway because "[music director] Donald [Runnicles] likes it." (It proved one of the triumphs of her five-year reign, coming to an end this January.) She also said she didn't care much for 19th-century French opera (except Berlioz) or the bel canto repertory, but she dismissed my obvious winces with the confidently airy, "But you won't miss it, because you've had such good productions under Lotfi Mansouri. There, on opening night, was the supposedly despised [Olga Borodina], in all her insinuating Slavic warmth and h...
A Canadian trucker will lose more than $267,000 found hidden in his rig during a traffic stop in Somerset County. Ebrahim Mansouri, 53, of Toronto, pleaded guilty in October to not reporting the money when he entered the country. State police in Somerset found the money during a traffic stop on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in September 2006 and say it tested positive for cocaine and heroin residue.
KUWAIT CITY - A fire at a wedding tent Saturday has killed at least 41 women and children guests and injured 76 others, authorities said. The official Kuwait News Agency quotes the fire department chief, Brig. Gen. Jassem al-Mansouri, as saying 41 bodies have been recovered from the scene in Jahra, a tribal area west of Kuwait City. KUNA said 76 people have been hospitalized with burns.
