When he showed up at Columbia Records on the afternoon of June 14, 1965, guitar case in hand, Al Kooper wasn't contracted to be there. But as a seasoned session player, songwriter and engineer, Kooper was a fixture in the New York music-industry scene. He had been part of the group the Royal Teens in 1958 when they scored a hit with "Short Shorts."
