When he showed up at Columbia Records on the afternoon of June 14, 1965, guitar case in hand, Al Kooper wasn't contracted to be there. But as a seasoned session player, songwriter and engineer, Kooper was a fixture in the New York music-industry scene.
He had been part of the group the Royal Teens in 1958 when they scored a hit with "Short Shorts." Gary Lewis & the Playboys took Kooper's tune "This Diamond Ring" to the top of the charts, though Kooper had originally co-written it with somebody much cooler in mind, maybe the Drifters.
