Meals begin with a complimentary banchan-traditional little tastes that showcase Korea's pickling obsession: fiery kimchi, cool cucumber wafers, chewy octopus, flaccid sprouts, fermented soy beans, half-moons of yellow daikon and excellent barbecued anchovies that chew like fish-flavored bubble-gum. Throw in some mandu-six delicate steamed dumplings filled with shrimp and scallions-and t's looking like Meju might be an ethnic treasure in disguise. Manna Korean BBQ is a rare bird on a number of notable levels. It's one of the few Korean eateries to be found on the Westside - which is to say, it's neither in Koreatown, nor on Western Avenue in Gardena. It's in what used to be called the Fox Hills Mall, but has been repurposed into the Westfield Culver City. Whatever you opt to call it, Korean restaurants are little known in this particular part of town.

Walk past the soothing, trickling water in its foyer and you'll find Dong Bang Grill is a fairly simple restaurant. The real action is on its tables, which are ablaze with colors and smells. Sizzling meat caramelizes on grills on the tables before diners snatch up slices to roll in crisp lettuce leaves with a dollop of miso and red pepper sauce. Chopsticks sail through little plates of banchan, the traditional small-dish accompaniments to a Korean meal - - tonight, it's several kinds of pungent, fermented kimchi made from cabbage and radish, a cooling potato salad with apples, shredded radish, a slaw with Thousand Island dressing and a comforting steamed egg custard.
