JERUSALEM -- Israeli undercover troops killed four Palestinian militants in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Wednesday, shattering a five-day lull in violence and threatening Egyptian efforts to mediate a cease-fire. Among the four were two men who had been wanted by the Israelis for years: Muhammad Shehada of Islamic Jihad and Ahmed Balboul, a senior figure in Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades, a militia affiliated with Fatah, the mainstream party headed by President Mahmoud Abbas.
Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, is scheduled to meet with President Bush in Washington today. The meeting comes at a time of smoldering violence against Israelis and equally worrisome inaction on the diplomatic front. There are a few things that need to be done by the Palestinians, the United States and Israel to ease this mindless violence and get the diplomatic momentum going again. Contrary to Ziad Asali's claims, there is less chance for an enduring peace between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs than in all of the years of conflict ("Towards Israeli-," Op- Ed, Monday). With two radical groups in charge of the Palestinian Authority, there is no viable negotiating partner for Israel. EREZ, Gaza Strip -- A young Palestinian mother, feigning a limp and requesting medical help, blew herself up on Wednesday at the entrance to a security inspection center for Palestinian workers, killing four Israeli security personnel and wounding seven people.
