  • JERUSALEM -- Israeli undercover troops killed four Palestinian militants in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Wednesday, shattering a five-day lull in violence and threatening Egyptian efforts to mediate a cease-fire. Among the four were two men who had been wanted by the Israelis for years: Muhammad Shehada of Islamic Jihad and Ahmed Balboul, a senior figure in Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades, a militia affiliated with Fatah, the mainstream party headed by President Mahmoud Abbas.

  • Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, is scheduled to meet with President Bush in Washington today. The meeting comes at a time of smoldering violence against Israelis and equally worrisome inaction on the diplomatic front. There are a few things that need to be done by the Palestinians, the United States and Israel to ease this mindless violence and get the diplomatic momentum going again. Over the weekend, three young Israelis were killed and several others were wounded in a drive-by shooting. Responsibility for the attack was claimed by an organization called the al-Aksa Martyrs Brigade, which is linked to Abbas' own Fatah movement. In response to the attack, Israel imposed new travel restrictions on the Palestinians and suspended diplomatic contacts with the Palest...

  • Contrary to Ziad Asali's claims, there is less chance for an enduring peace between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs than in all of the years of conflict ("Towards Israeli-," Op- Ed, Monday). With two radical groups in charge of the Palestinian Authority, there is no viable negotiating partner for Israel. Hamas is arguing for the immediate demise of Israel, and Fatah's terrorist wing, the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade, is demanding the return of the so-called refugees from the 1948 war to Israel, a move that would create a Palestinian-Arab state that would replace Israel.

  • WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY) a member of the House International Relations Committee, 1 Minute Floor Statement on the response to Iranian President, Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad statement, "Mr. Speaker, I rise this morning to join my colleagues in condemning the statement by the Iranian President, Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. President Ahmadinejad was speaking to 4,000 students who gathered at 'The World Without Zionism' conference when he recited the words of the imam, the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomenini. He further goes on and threatens 'Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury.' Mr. Speaker, this type of rhetoric cannot be tolerated. • Allegations by some misguided people that recent actions by Israel amounted to apartheid demand a response. The best way to address this propaganda is to look at some facts: IsraelOs citizens enjoy full equality before the law. This includes not only Jews from many ethnic and racial backgrounds N many who would have been the victims of apartheid in South Africa N but also the Muslim and Christian Arabs who make up one-fifth of the population.

  • A missile launched by either the Soviet Union or the United States might not reach its target for 18 to 30 minutes-enough time to begin a nuclear counterattack.2 In assessing the legality of nuclear weapons use, the UN's International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion in 1996 indicating that a nation might be justified in using nuclear weapons in order to save itself.3 The court's decision seemed to ratify the Cold War doctrine of mutually assured destruction. It could increase its stock of 100 to 200 nuclear weapons, but even with that arsenal it has been unable to deter Iran from building nuclear weapons and supporting terrorism against Israel for over 20 years.\n31 Military intervention would be authorized when state action causes a "large scale loss of life," according to...

  • In his book Understanding Terror Networks, Dr. Mark Sageman, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, examined the lives and livelihoods of more than 100 jihadists and concluded that while there are many causes of terrorism, poverty is not prominent among them. U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra and Sen. Rick Santorum, chairman of the House Permanent Committee on Intelligence and the chairman of the Senate Republican Conference Committee, respectively, wrote that the report on these chemical weapons should have been brought to public attention by officials in the intelligence community.

The bomber, Reem al-Reyashi, 22, said in a video released after the attack, "It was always my wish to turn my body into deadly shrapnel against the Zionists and to knock on the doors of heaven with the skulls of Zionists." • Take out "under God," restore pride in Pledge Has anyone considered that our founding fathers saw wisdom in not including "under God" in our Pledge of Allegiance? I don't believe they mentioned God at all in the Constitution, and "In God We Trust" on money is simply a statement, not a pledge.
