Silicon microphone maker Akustica Inc. said its product portfolio has expanded with a new analog micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS, microphone.
The AKU340 device is designed for mobile handsets; the high- performance analog microphone uses technology developed by The Bosch Group, which owns South Side-based Akustica.

The Bosch Research Technology Center, which works on sensor and communication technologies, and its sister company, Akustica Inc., plan to expand their 50-employee South Side operation by adding about 12 workers this year, said Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO of Akustica.

Akustica Inc. has launched its fourth-generation, single-chip digital microphone for computers, the South Side-based company said on Wednesday.
The new AKU230 chip will be used in laptop, tablet and netbook personal computers, enhancing the voice quality of programs such as Skype and Google Voice Search, the company said. This is Akustica's first product to use the fabrication capabilities and supply chain of the Bosch Group, which acquired Akustica in 2009.

Akustica Inc., a South Side-based designer of innovative digital mini-microphones used in cell phones and in webcams on laptop computers, has been acquired by a German company but will remain in Pittsburgh, the company said Wednesday.
The acquisition by Robert Bosch North America of Farmington Hills, Mich., a subsidiary of The Bosch Group of Stuttgart, gives Akustica opportunities to make new inroads into international markets, said Joseph Jacobson, CEO of the previously privately held company.
