These special conditions are issued for the Airbus A350-900 series airplane. These airplanes will have a novel or unusual design feature(s) associated with seats that include non-traditional, large, non-metallic panels that would affect survivability during a post-crash fire event. The applicable airworthiness regulations do not contain adequate or appropriate safety standards for this design feature. These special conditions contain the additional safety standards that the Administrator considers necessary to establish a level of safety equivalent to that established by the existing airworthiness standards.

The old joke used to continue: "And don't let the bedbugs bite." But these days, bedbugs are no joke. After 50 years of almost total inactivity, they are back with a vengeance, lurking in bedding, airplane seats and overstuffed furniture and causing movie theaters, hotel rooms and even one hospital to be closed for fumigation. A U.S. government report in August warned of an alarming resurgence of the bedbug population here and abroad. It can't give an exact cause but it cites heightened resistance to pesticides, increased foreign and domestic travel, public ignorance about the bugs because of their long absence, and ineffective pest control by state and local public health agencies.

My eldest son Bill was recently assigned to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. His wife and two daughters thought the rigors of the drive might prove less enjoyable than an airplane ride with reclining seats and complimentary drinks. So he needed someone to help him and his big black Lab, Fletch, make the trip. I was nominated. We started from northern Minnesota and the first leg was anything but interesting -- lots and lots of grain with flat land and silos. Bill missed a turn once, slammed on the brakes, threw Fletch and I forward, hooked a 180 and made a left turn on the proper route. The only comment made was, "that'll work." We both giggled at the vituperative remonstrations we would have received had our wives been along.
