Republic Airlines' decision to consolidate its maintenance operations at Mitchell International Airport is the best nugget of news we've heard in months. It's a win -- and a sizable one at that.
Republic, owner of Midwest Airlines, says it will add up to 800 jobs in Milwaukee and Oak Creek over the next year. About half of those jobs will come from outside Wisconsin, with about 300 of them aircraft maintenance jobs transferring from Denver.

DALLAS - The parent company of American Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection Tuesday, seeking relief from crushing debt caused by high fuel prices and expensive labor contracts that its competitors shed years ago.

American Airlines and its parent company, AMR Corp., trying to cut costs and unload debt built up by years of high jet fuel prices and labor struggles, filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday.
