After years of trying to attract additional air service, Tweed New Haven Regional Airport officials are pursuing a new route to try to make Tweed a more enticing choice to cost-conscious prospective airlines. They are looking to hire or form the airport's own ground services team to do things like ticketing and baggage handling for which airlines otherwise might have to hire their own employees.
Pinnacle Airlines Corp. sees a growth opportunity in baggage handling, ramp services and assorted support functions for other airlines. The Memphis-based regional airline holding company said Thursday it's rebranding and expanding contract ground services as PinnPro Professional Ground Services.
Continental Airlines and its regional affiliate ExpressJet Airlines - the top two carriers at Newark Liberty International Airport -- were fined a combined $100,000 Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Transportation for holding passengers for nearly six hours this summer on a grounded aircraft in Minnesota. Mesaba Airlines, which provided ground-handling services for the flight, was fined $75,000. It is the first time airlines were fined because of a long tarmac delay, and that could signal a tougher government stand on behalf of passengers stuck for hours in grounded aircraft -- a key issue in an ongoing debate in Congress over airline passenger rights.

A federal judge last week ended a class action brought by JetBlue passengers who claimed they had to endure hellish conditions when their planes were stranded on an airport tarmac in Connecticut for over seven hours in 2011.
