The U.S. Navy has estimated a worst-case cost overrun of as much as $1.1 billion for the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, the service's most expensive warship.
The carrier is being built by Huntington Ingalls Industries under a cost-plus, incentive-fee contract in which the Navy pays for most of the overruns. Even so, the service's efforts to control expenses may put the company's $579.2 million profit at risk, according to the Navy.

The Navy has awarded Newport News Shipbuilding a $113.2 million contract modification, exercising options to continue work in preparation for the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79).

Three groups submitted initial applications, according to the Navy, and two advanced to the second phase of the process.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus says the nation's next aircraft carrier will be named the John F. Kennedy.
