WOODS CROSS -- It was supposed to be a four-year plan: Get in a starter home, live there and sell it at a profit.
Never mind that a refinery sits across the tracks past the backyard.

EPA and NHTSA, on behalf of the Department of Transportation, are issuing this joint proposal to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel economy for light-duty vehicles for model years 2017-2025. This proposal extends the National Program beyond the greenhouse gas and corporate average fuel economy standards set for model years 2012-2016. On May 21, 2010, President Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum requesting that NHTSA and EPA develop through notice and comment rulemaking a coordinated National Program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of light-duty vehicles for model years 2017- 2025. This proposal, consistent with the President's request, responds to the country's critical need to address global climate change and to reduce oil consumption. NHTSA is proposing C...

With its military bases expanding dramatically, Maryland would seem to be ahead of other states in the competition for new jobs. William E. Kirwan knows better.
Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland, assessed the competition as head of a task force and delivered the bad news to Gov. Martin O'Malley last summer:

GRANDVIEW - On Monday morning, August 20, 2007, Merle "Rusty" Dale Cohu, age 76, died peacefully in his home with his beloved family around him. He is now with his Heavenly Father. On March 9, 1931, he was born in his family home in Granby, Missouri to Wilfred Merle and Zorada Ann (Peebles) Cohu. His father worked the pipeline in the lower 48 states, so the family moved often. Merle attended 17 grade schools before his family settled in Grandview as he entered 7th grade. After high school graduation he attended college for a time, then entered the United States Air Force as an air traffic controller, serving in Iceland and Greenland during the Korean War. GANDER, NEWFOUNDLAND -- The passengers staggered into the vast terminal, bewildered and bleary-eyed, hours after their planes touched down.
They hadn't seen the towers fall. They knew little of the attacks -- only what they'd gathered from scattered cellphone conversations before their batteries died or from their pilots, who shared radio news reports. It was incomprehensible.

As a private pilot who keeps an aircraft at Evansville Regional Airport, I want to speak in support of our local air traffic controllers.
I did my original flight training in Madison, Wis., my high performance training in Atlanta and have flown in air space from California to New York. My exposure to the air traffic control system leaves me happy to report favorable experiences throughout this country.
Many U.S. flight schools are training pilots from around the globe to prov...
