NORFOLK - Anthony Joseph Kucharczyk, 44, died suddenly Dec. 21, 2010 in Norfolk. Active U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Okla., he was a career Navy veteran serving on the aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise, USS Truman and the USS Theodore Roosevelt, with multiple deployments in the Middle East during both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He successfully completed Air Traffic Control School in Pax River, Washington, D.C. He chose to become an AT. His service included assignment to the "Blue Angels" air squadron in Nevada.

CHESAPEAKE - Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ronald Wayne Freitas, 51, husband of Anne M. Freitas of Chesapeake, lost his courageous battle with cancer Feb. 22, 2009. Ron was born March 22, 1957, in Dillon, S.C., the oldest of three sons born to Mary Freitas and Ralph Freitas. Ron graduated from Dillon High School in 1975 and joined the United States Navy. After attending boot camp in Orlando, Fla., he attended the Navy's Air Traffic Control School in Millington, Tenn. After 30 years of service, he retired from the Navy in 2005, Ron was hired by Systems Research Group where he was made director of Operations supporting Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force air traffic control systems. • Air National Guard Honors Two From Western Pennsylvania

Tech. Sgt. Thomas Cloonan came home to Ross from a deployment to Qatar the day the Pennsylvania Air National Guard announced he is one of two Western Pennsylvanians named airmen of the year. The Guard on Wednesday said it also honored Airman Monica Erlick, 25, an Upper St. Clair High School graduate who serves with the 171st Air Refueling Wing, 258th Air Traffic Control Squadron based in Johnstown. Cloonan, 31, serves with the 171st Air Refueling Wing, 171st Medical Group in Moon.

Gregory Schoolcraft was promoted to the rank of chief petty officer in the Navy on Sept. 16. Schoolcraft, based in Virginia Beach, Va., at Naval Air Station Oceana, was among 40 promoted to the chief petty officer rank within the Air Traffic Control field of 251 eligible candidates. He enlisted in the Navy in September 1989 and attended recruit training in Orlando, Fla., then reported to the Naval Air Station Memphis in Millington, Tenn., where he completed Air Traffic Control School.
