Space shuttle Discovery will become a permanent installation at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, officials announced last week. Three other shuttles are headed to Florida, California and New York.
Discovery clocked more days in space than any other spacecraft and flew 39 missions. It was the first shuttle to fly after the Challenger and Columbia disasters, and it flew John Glenn back into space at age 77. It completed its final mission March 9.

When the National Air and Space Museum opened the doors to its new facility near Dulles International Airport on Dec. 15, it displayed a Bell UH-13J Ranger, one of the first helicopters used to transport the president of the United States.
The Air Force chose Bell helicopters in 1957 to ferry Dwight D. Eisenhower to National Airport and, eventually, to Camp David and his farm in Gettysburg.

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar- Hazy Center has been a huge success since it opened near Washington Dulles International Airport almost a year ago.
More than 1.5 million visitors have filed through the hangar- like structure to ride the space simulators and see aircraft such as the Concorde, the space shuttle Enterprise and World War II bomber Enola Gay.
