- Hopewell Pollution Increases Cancer Risk
HOPEWELL -- Air pollution in some parts of Hopewell is at levels that put residents at a higher risk of getting cancer, according to a new study released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The assessment released last week also ranks Hopewell third- riskiest among the cities and counties in the state based on the chemicals found in the city's air. The city has the 78th-highest risk of cancer from air pollution among more than 60,000 localities assessed in the country, placing it in the top 2 percent.

Thursday's pollution alert has been extended into today and expanded to include both ozone and particulate pollution. The alerts by the Evansville Environmental Protection Agency and Vanderburgh County Health Department mean that levels of one or both kinds of air pollution in Vanderburgh, Warrick and Henderson counties may reach or exceed the EPA's Air Quality Index "Orange Alert" levels.
