One would have to look deep and stretch the facts to come to a conclusion that the proposed waste transfer station is in the best interest of the city of Pomona and her residents. After reading the draft EIR (still working on the final) I would have to question the motive of any city official in favor of this WTS.
The known and written facts are that, even with mitigation measures, there will be an increase in air pollution, vectors, odors, noise, visual impact, traffic and street maintenance. The site is located adjacent to three of Pomona's groundwater wells (Nos. 11, 12 and 18) and a booster station (No. 6). It is located within one mile of nine schools, a group home for the disabled and in one of the poorest residential areas in Pomona. The EIR and agencies involved only look at a 1...

Maybe the problem lies in the name -- freeway. In reality, there is nothing free about these roadways. You pay for them through gas taxes and in many other ways. They require regular maintenance. They must be plowed in the winter. And yet they stand mostly empty much of the day and are clogged to a standstill during the rush hours -- a slowdown that affects commerce, wastes fuel and adds to air pollution.
Viewed against those facts, congestion pricing makes a lot of sense. It uses market principles to spread the freeway's load.

The news story "Natural gas drillers' damage to roads debated"(Dec. 29 and TribLIVE.com) paraphrases Kathryn Klaber, executive director of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, when it states that "any air quality problems caused by drilling are small compared to those caused by power plants or vehicles emitting pollutants.
We can debate whether the benefits of natural gas drilling outweigh the risks, but we can't debate the facts: Numerous studies indicate natural gas production and transmission generate astonishing quantities of air pollution.

Whether they are rich or poor, Republican or Democrat, Californians are united in one respect: In many parts of the state, they breathe bad air.
To draw attention to the facts that Californians breathe some of the unhealthiest air in the nation and that pollution can worsen and even cause lung disease, the American Lung Association of California is holding the Healthy Air Walk statewide.
