  • A study conducted by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has revealed a correlation between asthma attacks in children and increased air pollution in the Valley. The study was funded by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and tracked Phoenix-area hospital and emergency room reports of asthma attacks in children between the ages of 5-18 from January 2005 until September 2006. The approximately 5,000 asthma attacks were then compared to air-quality data from the region in which they occurred.

  • The desire for good health is virtually universal. Many of us go to great lengths to maintain our health. In spite of these efforts, all of us have relatives or friends who have diseases caused by air pollution. Air pollution is now linked to six of the top seven causes of death among Americans. A partial list of these diseases includes the following, all drawn from peer-reviewed studies published in leading medical journals: premature mortality from all causes, asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, lung cancer, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, fatal abnormalities of heart rhythm, stroke and the loss of intellectual capacity. Emerging data suggest that Type II diabetes mellitus and possibly Alzheimer's disease may be linked to air pollution.

  • Coming into the cold season, with the climate changing from warm to cold, children tend to experience more asthmatic attacks. Most of the children we see are under 5 years old," said Sandra Eger-McTernan, RN, MSN, CPNP, and a Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) pediatric nurse speciaUst. Eger-McTernan has been doing homecare for 25 years and working with VNSNY for the past 18 years. "The highest incidents of asthma occur in Puerto Rican and African-American children. There is a genetic component that causes them to experience more severe forms of asthma. When it comes to families being able to control the severity of a child's asthma, the key is recognizing the symptoms and treating them early. A lot of families don't realize that children are having symptoms at night. Like a ch...

  • Forty percent of American corn goes into ethanol as a gasoline additive. Yet this Hamburger Helper-style mix reduces fuel mileage, has little effect on petroleum imports, causes little or no reduction in air pollution or greenhouse gases, raises food prices, and will cost taxpayers $30 billion in the next five years in ethanol subsidies, Now the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has expanded this misuse of a vital farm product by increasing the ethanol proportion to 15 percent for cars and trucks with model years of 2001 and later. The EPA needed to increase the ethanol mix because demand was falling short of the mandated ethanol production level that will rise to 36 billion gallons year by 2022.

  • Avimor and Hidden Springs both frustrate me, and they're both Orwellian. Avimor markets its clean air; well, whose clean air? It's not my clean air. Most people drive down and shop at Albertson's or Costco. Let's not kid ourselves. Avimor and Hidden Springs spread everything out. They are, in my view, part of the urban sprawl problem. You don't want cities that just pop up haphazardly throughout the county. It's our infrastructure that's impacted. They're going to drive down State Street. They're going to be bused into Meridian School District every single day. That causes air pollution. If they had a movie theater out there in Avimor, then you'd get some trip capture because they'd be able to see the movie out there. Those types of developments need to be looked at very carefully, and ...
