TACOMA In a historic decision for what he termed a "highly charged civil-rights movement," a federal judge on Friday ordered the Air Force Reserve to reinstate Maj. Margaret Witt, a lesbian flight nurse, to her position at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
You will provide the best evidence that open service of gays and lesbians will have no adverse effect on cohesion, morale or readiness in this or perhaps any Air Force or military unit," said U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Leighton, who after the ruling spoke from the bench in a voice that often quavered with emotion.

A $12.4 million appropriation moving through Congress shows the Pentagon no longer views the Air Force Reserve's 911th Airlift Wing in Moon as a target for elimination, the unit's commanding officer said Wednesday.
Col. Gordon H. Elwell said the wing hasn't received construction funding since 1996 because it twice was targeted for closure in nationwide restructurings of military bases. The 911th emerged from the latest review in 2005 with a recommendation for expansion.

The spokesman for the Army Reserve's 316th Sustainment Command is suing an Air Force Reserve official for allegedly defaming him in an email to his commanding officer, according to federal court documents filed today.
Capt. Kevin McNamara filed the sealed lawsuit in Allegheny County Common Pleas against Terrance Stuart, director of Airman and Family Readiness at the 911th Airlift Wing. The U.S. Attorney's Office, which is representing Stuart, filed a motion to move the case to federal court. Stuart was acting in his official capacity when he sent the email to McNamara's commanding officer, the notice says.
