WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE -- An Air Force computer logistics management system would have needed a $1 billion infusion to obtain a fraction of its goal and wouldn't have been fielded until the end of the decade, according to a published report.
The Air Force canceled the delay-plagued and ever-rising costly Expeditionary Combat Support System, managed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, after it had already spent $1 billion on the system and then announced last month 115 people would lose their jobs and 55 others on the project would be reassigned at the Miami Valley base.

Robert B. Mayer, retired regional president and director of Norstar Bank, died Friday in Sisters Hospital after a brief illness. He was 79.
Born in Wellsville, Mr. Mayer was an Air Force veteran. He was a graduate of Bennett High School, the University of Buffalo and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.

WASHINGTON, July 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United States Mint and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) are teaming up to encourage regular use of $1 coins in everyday cash transactions at military exchanges. Retailers at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Fort Huachuca, Arizona; and Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Academy in Colorado have been selected by AAFES to participate in a $1 coin launch initiative to begin on July 4. The goal of the initiative is to expand $1 coin usage to all 1,703 AAFES locations throughout the country. Exchanges are retail stores located on military bases and facilities that serve active duty and retired members of the Armed Forced and their families.

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE -- An expansion of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force gained momentum toward launch with a $1 million donation for a fourth hangar gallery at the main complex.
United Technologies Corp. pledged the donation over four years, bringing the $48.7 million project within $10 million of its goal, said Lin Erickson, chief development officer of the Air Force Museum Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organizing the fundraising for the project.
