For many Santa Feans, Aid & Comfort is a festive party one night in November. For other Northern New Mexicans, it's a lifeline of support when no other help is available. And for Al Lama, Aid & Comfort is almost a second job -- albeit a volunteer one -- with an organization in which he strongly believes. Lama works days as director of the Civil Division in the New Mexico attorney general's office. Several nights a month -- and much more during the weeks leading up to the annual Aid & Comfort gala -- he attends meetings and contributes to organizational and fund- raising efforts as Aid & Comfort's board president. The local nonprofit organization raises money to pay for medical treatment for Northern New Mexicans with HIV/AIDS who have no insurance and no way to pay for the treatment.

The art of winter The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts presents Indian Market every August -- a celebration of Native creativity in all media as well as a collector's paradise. A smaller version of the event, the Winter Showcase, debuts this weekend at the Inn and Spa at Loretto, Alameda Street at Old Santa Fe Trail. More than 100 artists from Indian Market show and sell their work, including Fritz Casuse, Phillip Charette, Marvin Oliver, Caroline Carpio, and Marcus Amerman. A wine and hors d'oeuvres preview from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, has a $50 admission charge. HYBRID ECONOMIC POLICY WELCOME After an initially negative reaction to our federal government's new hybrid capitalism-socialism system, I am beginning to see the merit. It just needs to be generalized to the entire interaction between government and those begging for help. Instead of giving earmarks, subsidies, and tax breaks, each time some outfit begs for taxpayers' largesse, the government (on our behalf) takes an equitable stake in the outfit. When the recipient has saved up the amount of the stake, they can buy back the government's share and be back on the capitalistic side of the ledger. This could even work for federally funded state and local projects as well. Reciprocity rocks!
