Due to both deepening economic crises and pressure from external lenders, Costa Rica and El Salvador implemented trade and market liberalization reforms in the 1980s. This study explores whether these policy changes shifted production toward each country's presumed comparative advantage in agriculture. For Costa Rica, trade and market liberalization strengthened the country's ability to generate agricultural trade surpluses while liberalization caused a decline in El Salvador's agricultural sector. Liberalization also affected how prices and exchange rates influence agriculture in both countries. The findings demonstrate that agriculture's response to liberalization can vary widely among countries. Overall market conditions in the rural sector, including El Salvador's post-conflict chal...

Peter Mandelson, the European Union trade commissioner, said Nov. 11 that the Doha round of negotiations on trade liberalization (Dec. 13-18) in Hong Kong is likely to fail. "The problem," he said, "is that whatever we offer is not enough for the highly competitive, very aggressive agricultural producers and exporters like Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
Mr. Mandelson should resist the protectionist calls from within the EU and embrace the ambitious proposals on agricultural trade liberalization as outlined by his American counterpart. The EU (as well as America) stand to gain a great deal from cutting and, eventually, eliminating their agricultural support programs.

A vast literature deals with these issues, including a number of comprehensive surveys from which this paper draws, and where the interested reader is advised to go for more details.1 For the purposes of this article, I will review the evidence so far on the four main ways in which trade is linked with inequality and poverty (economic growth, family income, the labor market, and fiscal effects) and attempt to draw some lessons for policy. A study for India found that trade liberalization has indeed increased labor demand elasticity and has done so more in states with more labor market flexibility. 12 A study in Mexico found that tariff declines were associated with increased income uncertainty.13 A more uncertain product demand...

Overall Pakistan took the challenges and opportunities of globalization with a positive and optimistic attitude as shown by its position during the WTO negotiations and its implementation of the WTO agreements. On the impact of the liberalization policies implemented in Pakistan, the country's economy, however, is still in the process of adjustment and therefore the full impact of the WTO implementation is yet to evolve--as the process follows policy changes in Pakistan and its economic/trading partners' policies. Here, Noshab discusses globalization and WTO in relation to the impact of economic policy changes in Pakistan.
