Why are we having a rash of flooding? About 150 years ago the Midwestern land was largely characterized by tall prairie grasses and perennial vegetation, which served to prevent large-scale and frequent flooding. When agriculture became a dominant practice, however, bare soil with little vegetation became a commonality during rainy seasons.
