  • Research conducted over the past 20 years has linked exposure to violence to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children both in the United States and South Africa, but very little research has investigated PTSD as a mediating variable between exposure to violence and other problems. The purpose of the current research was to determine if PTSD acts as a mediating variable between exposure to violence and depression, and exposure to violence and aggressive and violent behavior at school among a sample of 247 South African children. Regression analysis suggested that PTSD mediated the effects of exposure to violence on depression, whereas the effect of exposure to violence on aggression and violent behavior was only direct. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications fo...

Feminism taught the current generation of young women to unsex themselves," said [Helen Smith]. "The reason they were taught to unsex themselves is because the Second Wave Feminists believed that femininity is inferior to masculinity. " "As a result (of shedding feminine behavior), women are lauded for encompassing unladylike traits such as violence and assertiveness-especially when they use those traits against men," said Smith. The research was based on life history interviews with individuals who used methamphetamine for a minimum of three months and who resided in Los Angeles County. Of the 205 respondents, 55 (26.8%) had committed violence while under the influence of methamphetamine. Males comprised two thirds of the 55 respondents (N=36). Of the total sample, 30% of males and 23% of females committed methamphetamine-related violence, respectively. Overall, the 55 respondents reported 80 separate violent events while using methamphetamine. • It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child. Equally important, it takes a community to protect our children. Too many of our children are regularly exposed to violence in their homes, schools and neighborhoods. Substantial numbers of our youngest citizens have been abused, neglected or assaulted, while others - as horrifically recounted recently in descriptions of the Lester Street murders - have been killed. Moreover, countless numbers witness domestic or neighborhood violence every day. Research shows that stress and trauma - such as witnessing or being victims of violence - can impair children's brain development. Some studies have found that adults who experienced significant early-life stress have differences in brain structure compared to people who experienced low ...

  • However, the research on violent video games is limited to its physical effects (physical activity that is replaced by playing video games), behavioral effects (the ability to predict violence and aggression as an outcome of playing video games), and gender issues related to video games. Anderson and Pill (2000) examined 200 college students and found violent video game play and aggressive personality account for major portions of both aggressive behavior and non-aggressive delinquent behavior. Recreation settings can also offer non-violent video games in a supervised setting (perhaps an after-school program), therefore limiting the negative effects (aggressive behavior and social isolation) and providing a healthy environment in which to play.
