NEW YORK - A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit charging that American chemical companies committed war crimes against some 4 million Vietnamese citizens by making Agent Orange, the military defoliant that allegedly caused birth defects, miscarriages and cancer. I was never in the military hell, I wasn't even a Boy Scout -- but I came of age during the Vietnam War and, to my great relief, the conflict ended when I was a senior in high school. I was required to get a draft card, but that was as close as I came to conscription. So my service was limited to standing and waiting while others, a little older and a lot braver than I, were shipped off to Southeast Asia to get shot at. You felt just terrible when you heard somebody's older brother or the kid down the street had been drafted.
