My argument proceeds in the following stages. First, I argue that, pace Beiser, Fichte does not actually hold the sort of moral ultrarationalism attributed to him by Schiller. Following a brief discussion of the Kantian background to Fichte's moral philosophy, I show that he rejects this ultra-rationalism because it violates the requirements of moral agency, and so furnishes agents with aims that they cannot coherently pursue. Adapting the formal structure of Kant's "highest good" in his own way, Fichte presents what he calls a "real" ethics as an alternative to both rationalism and naturalism. Fichte's overriding concern in both instances is with agent unity, with the harmonization of the two sides of our Uves as moral agents, viz., sensibiUty and rationaUty. This is a concern that run...

The literature suggests that compliance behaviors are important in sustaining supply chain relationships when dealing with supply disruptions. This study empirically examines the role of agent-level factors on compliance in supply chain relationships, departing from previous research that focused mainly on firm-level factors. We find that after controlling for dependence and relational norms, some dimensions of agent cooperativeness and assertiveness are still significantly related to compliance. These findings suggest that certain characteristics of decision-making agents do matter in supply chain relationship dynamics, and encourage further research on the role of agent-level factors in affecting various aspects of supply chain phenomenon.

Several factors affecting life insurance agent production were tested in an effort to produce a predictive model of agent and agency production. Surprisingly, formal education, professional education, and training showed no affect on production. The number of policyholders and smaller management span of control both proved predictive. The most important predictors, however, proved to be prior performance. The purpose of this study is to analyze factors commonly believed to affect life insurance agent production. This study will also test many of the factors commonly used within the insurance industry to select new agents. A final objective is to stimulate further research and experiment into the system of delivering financial services and products. Annual production forecasts are genera...

Wal-Mart has been successful in opening retail discount mass merchandising stores across the United States, mainly in smaller, rural cities, where limited competition exists from small mom and pop retailers. As part of growth plans, Wal-Mart began opening stores in larger, suburban and urban areas and now faced competition from Target and other specialty retailers. Soon, same stores sales growth slowed and growth from new stores was limited by many communities objecting to Wal-Mart locating stores in their town. Management was concerned whether the low price strategy could sustain growth. Several managers were hired to craft a new strategy moving away from price into more stylish fashion and "value propositions." The fashion initiative failed and management brought in outside marketing ...

In the business world, technology matters -- even if some highly influential thought leaders might say, or write, otherwise. Brett Moore, CFO of the McLane Group, in Temple, TX, can recall when his company introduced the first personal computer to one of its operation divisions in 1985. Since then, Moore says, technology developments have dramatically changed how the company interacts with its customers and, ultimately, makes decisions. Since its inception in 2002, San Francisco-based Pay By Touch has demonstrated a commitment to integrating new technologies to help its customers. The company provides biometric authentication, loyalty, membership, and payment solutions. Adapting the company's processes, people and technology is vital, particularly in today's fast-paced marketplace and g...

The Department of State is amending the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) to add an exemption for the temporary export of chemical agent protective gear for personal use. The exemption for body armor is amended to also cover helmets when they are included with the body armor. An exemption for firearms and ammunition is clarified by removing certain extraneous language that does not change the meaning of the exemption, and by standardizing the language among the exemptions in this section of the regulations. The registration requirement as it relates to certain exemptions is clarified. And an error in the authorities for part 126 of the ITAR is corrected.
