In December 2005, journalism education experts meeting at the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) decided to identify "centres of excellence" in African journalism education so that UNESCO would know which institutions to work with in developing ("capacity building") journalism education and journalism education in Africa. For the purposes of this study, African "journalism schools" were defined as journalism programs at universities and private colleges, and in nongovernmental organizations (NGOs.) Data were gathered on ninety-six programs in thirty-six of the fifty-four African countries, including sixty Anglophone, thirty Francophone, and six Lusophone.

[Michael Manley]'s internationalist outlook propelled Jamaica on to the world stage as a major player in the liberation struggles in Southern Africa after assuming office in 1972. In 1973 at the non-aligned movement summit in Algeria Jamaica's focus was on the need for a New Economic Order as well as the liberation of Southern Africa. State visits were paid to Kaunda's Zambia and [Julius Nyerere]'s Tanzania. Jamaica increased its role in the deliberations of the Group of 77 while concretising relations with the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) as well as being more active in UN activities. The campaign will feature public service announcements (PSAs) and online communications, as well as targeted messages and outreach to the populations most severely affected by HIV/AIDS, beginning with AfricanAmericans, with subsequent phases focusing on Latinos and other communities disproportionately impacted. To help achieve widespread use of the campaign messages within AfricanAmerican communities, the Obama Administration also announced the Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative (AAALI), a partnership with 14 of the nation's leading African-American civic organisations to integrate HIV prevention into each organisation's outreach programmes.

Meanwhile, in Kenya, first lady Lucy Kibaki attacked a pillar of the nation's anti-AIDS program by condemning the distribution of condoms to teenagers. Mrs. Kibaki, who chairs the Organisation of the 40 African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS, said young people had "no business using condoms" and should practice abstinence instead.

This article examines the cultural-based critiques of the international human rights paradigm generally and children's rights in particular, with specific reference to Africa. In this regard, the paper attempts to identify gaps in the analyses of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. Towards that end, the paper proceeds in three parts. In the first section, it situates the discussion within the general framework of children's rights at international law. In the next section, it turns to an examination of the culture-based critiques of the idea of universal rights. IT'S not every day that a Christian preacher is allowed to preach in a mosque, but when African missionary Stephen Lungu was given this opportunity in Egypt, more than 200 Muslims came to hear him. Mr Lungu was in New Plymouth addressing a breakfast gathering of 350 people on Thursday morning and will spend Easter weekend sharing his story at various city churches.
