  • Characteristics of the author's social justice model of leadership for African-American academic administrators include preparing new black scholars to carry on the tradition of the black academic community, interpreting their role as a spiritual vocation that serves the greater good, and providing students with the moral and social assistance needed to ensure their success. In a study of four African-American women college presidents of minority serving institutions in America, each college president agreed that to be a successful administrator the African-American female must have some key characteristics: personal style and wit, as well as a profound knowledge of the many aspects of higher education administration.

  • Not only is the Black leadership class unable to create jobs at living wages for the hundreds of thousands of Black families that desperately need them, they can't even describe to the rest of America how such a thing might be done. They dare not acknowledge the acute shortage of low and moderate-income housing or publicly question programs, which exacerbate that shortage. Black leadership has proven powerless to prevent the nationwide imposition of separate and grossly unequal education, the disastrous application of high-stakes testing and the use of "No Child Left Behind" to discredit and defund public education. He was noticeably moved by the crowd who assembled in his support and assured everyone, "I will come through this clean" and "if these attacks on me help us all to come together to do the work of our community and for all working class people then this is just what I have to do. Freeman and other union members were quick to point out that under Freeman's presidency most of the union membership and there families have a quality healthcare insurance program. "Many of the members also make a lot more than the $9.00 per hour as has been reported." Freeman himself explained "Many of our ...

  • WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) weighs the evidence on the deadly impact of menthol cigarettes, three African American organizations have spoken out against a potential ban, urging the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee to consider the negative implications of a ban and to discount any unsubstantiated evidence on menthol. The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) and National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) have expressed concerns that evidence to support a ban is inconclusive and a dangerous "black market" for menthol products could develop due to the ban. Legacy, who was an early proponent of a menthol ban, respectfully disagrees. We join the N...

  • Theorists posit that the social reinforcement of racially oppressive assumptions eventually works its way into the psyche of African Americans and negatively shapes the way they see themselves and others within their race. Some scholars have attempted to prove and others have subsequently disputed the idea that school achievement within African American peer groups is seen as "acting White." In this study, internalized racism and Fordham and Ogbu's (1986) Acting White Hypothesis were explored among high-achieving African American male undergraduates at six predominantly White universities. Findings from individual interviews contradict the hypothesis and reveal ways through which peer support for leadership and achievement were negotiated within African American peer groups on the six c...
