  • The two chestnut colts came thundering down the track almost as one. For the final several hundred yards, they were head to head as the Belmont Park crowd of 65,417 screeched and a national TV audience stared. A photo finish was necessary to determine the winner of the 110th Belmont Stakes - for everyone, that is, except Steve Cauthen aboard Affirmed. A few yards beyond the finish line, the 18-year-old jockey stood up in the saddle and waved his left arm in triumph. He knew, even if no one else did.

  • History will eventually decide whether the 2007 thoroughbred racing season has produced a 3-year-old crop for the ages, or just a trio of evenly matched horses that can't shake the others loose. Is this Affirmed and Alydar with another great horse thrown in for good measure? Or is it Candy Spots, Chateaugay and Never Bend?

  • May 20 -- Affirmed, ridden by Steve Cauthen, continues the battle with Alydar and wins the Preakness Stakes by a neck.

  • MIDLOTHIAN - The more things change, the more they stay the same. Beth Jaeckle has been the field hockey coach for Thomas Dale for the past seven years. Each year the Knights have won the Central District regular-season title and the district tournament crown.

  • It's that time of year when hope springs eternal for thoroughbred racing fans. The two weeks between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness is when dreams of a Triple Crown champion start dancing in our heads. It's been 33 long years since Affirmed crossed the wire ahead of his rival Alydar at Belmont Park to claim the last Triple Crown in 1978. Only 33 horses have been eligible to win the Triple Crown entering the Belmont Stakes, but just 11 have succeeded. But don't count your chicken wing until it's sauced, as there is plenty of work to be done.

  • LOS ANGELES - The makers of the movie "Secretariat" hope to attract millions of viewers who weren't yet alive when the great horse was racing in 1972 and 1973. Those members of the audience may wonder how much of the narrative is fact and how much is Hollywood gloss. Just about every turf writer who has previewed "Secretariat" - which opens nationwide today - has pointed out historical inaccuracies and significant omissions in the film. Having followed Secretariat's career as a journalist, I found some of the omissions distracting (particularly the expurgation of his Kentucky Derby- winning stablemate Riva Ridge).

  • When Smarty Jones leaves the starting gate Saturday, he won't only be trying to win the Belmont Stakes. He also will be chasing the ghost of a horse whose stature has grown with every Triple Crown failure. By now, the story of Smarty Jones is well known and approaching legend status, but what of Affirmed, the last horse to win the three Triple Crown races in 1978? After 26 years, Affirmed's name still resonates, but mostly he is remembered only for his classic battles with runner-up Alydar.

  • LOUISVILLE, Ky. No matter what happens even on the biggest day in thoroughbred racing Bernardini seems destined to remain shadowed by Barbaro. The Kentucky Derby winner is recovering from a devastating misstep at the start of the Preakness in what has been a bittersweet year in racing.

  • Steve Cauthen was an 18-year-old kid with a daunting task in 1978: ride Affirmed to victory in the Belmont Stakes and win the Triple Crown. And the small-town jockey from Kentucky had more than Affirmed to worry about, too. Cauthen and his chestnut colt faced a worthy opponent in Alydar.
